Orcas
Bound by DarknessOrcas occupy a small but memorable place in the story’s network of animals, water, and healing. Larem q’Jones mentions them while answering Sasha Willis’s question about what to see in Seattle, and his recollection turns a casual tourist recommendation into a glimpse of his capacity for wonder, companionship, and attention to living creatures beyond the human world.
Appearance in Larem’s Recollection
Larem tells Sasha that he prefers the water to the mountains and describes a recent whale-watching trip on Puget Sound north of Seattle. The excursion offered him an experience he considered extraordinary: the Orcas were capable of being “amazingly playful.” His wording presents them not as scenery alone but as active, intelligent presences whose behavior made the day memorable.
The recollection also places Larem within a social circle. He had spent the day on one of the excursion boats with Hunter Fitzsimon, Hunter’s mate Tate Justice, and three of Tate’s elderly neighbors. The Orcas therefore belong to a shared experience rather than to an isolated private vision; their presence briefly gathers people of different ages around an encounter with the marine world.
Connection to Seattle and the Natural World
The Orcas help define Seattle through Puget Sound rather than through the city’s reputation for gray weather. Sasha has heard that Seattle is gloomy, but the conversation takes place during a sunny late-summer afternoon, and Larem directs her toward the water. The animals become part of his alternative portrait of the region: a place where the Sound offers movement, sunlight, and contact with wildlife.
This detail contrasts with the enclosed environments associated with animal care elsewhere in the narrative. Larem works among the barks, yips, and growls of a clinic filled with damp concrete and medicine, where frightened animals depend on human patience and his healing gift. The Orcas, by contrast, are encountered in their own element and are described through their spontaneous play. Together, these settings broaden the story’s concern with animals from rescue and treatment to observation and respect.
Relation to Larem and Sasha Willis
Larem’s account gives Sasha a practical suggestion, but it also reveals a shared tenderness toward animals. Sasha has volunteered in the nursery of the St. Louis Zoo and is considering similar work after settling in Seattle; Larem cares for injured and traumatized animals at Dr. Isaac’s clinic. Their exchange over the Orcas thus becomes one of several indications that they have interests in common, even while Larem cannot disclose the nonhuman origin of his DNA or the prejudice he faces.
The Orcas also mark a moment in which Larem can speak openly about pleasure. His life is shaped by exile, secrecy, and the difficulty of belonging, yet he can still recall an “incredible experience” shared with friends on the water. The animals’ playfulness offers a counterimage to the fear and damage surrounding Chance, the enormous white dog whom Larem helps heal, and to the distrust that shadows Larem’s relationships with people.
Thematic Significance
The Orcas receive only a brief appearance, but the scene refuses to reduce animals to mere instruments of human plot. Their behavior supplies the emotional substance of Larem’s memory, while their natural setting preserves a degree of independence from human control. The story’s wider animal encounters move between vulnerability and agency: Chance begins as a severely injured, frightened animal who must learn to trust, whereas the Orcas are seen as powerful beings whose playful activity needs neither rescue nor explanation.
Their presence also strengthens the motif of connection across boundaries. Larem, who is treated as an outsider because his biology is not fully human, recognizes value in creatures whose intelligence and social life exceed a simple human-centered account. The whale-watching memory does not resolve his isolation, but it shows him participating in a community of observers and friends, momentarily at ease beside a world that is larger than the conflicts dividing Kalithia, Seattle, humans, and Kalith people.
